Description
The Wood Monument, located approximately 7 metres south of the west end of the south chapel at the Church of St Peter and St Paul, is a chest tomb dating from around 1816 and is designed in the Neo-Classical style. It is constructed from ashlar stone and features a chamfered base stone and a moulded plinth. The monument has recessed corners with fluted balusters that have swept plinths and capitals, supporting a lid with a triple-roll-moulded edge. Each side of the tomb has a concave-cornered panel within an architrave, adorned with fan decoration in the spandrels. The panels bear commemorative inscriptions for various members of the Wood family, with the earliest recorded death being that of George Wood, who died in 1816. The inscription notes, "A fatal accident deprived him of life and his afflicted parents of a darling son," followed by a verse that is largely obscured. The lid of the monument is split, and one corner is broken off.
