Description
Numbers 1 to 4 Pilgrims Lane, also known as Church and Forge Cottages, is a row of cottages dating from the 16th century, with a 17th-century extension on the left, 19th-century restorations, and a 20th-century wing projecting from the center. The cottages are timber framed with brick infill on the right, a red brick wing in the center, and knapped flint with brick dressings on the left end. They have plain tiled roofs featuring a ridge stack on the end right, a stack to the left of center, and another stack to the right.
The buildings are two stories tall, with two framed bays on the right that have 19th-century casement windows and a half-timbered dormer. To the left of center is one framed bay with a gabled front return wing on the left end. There is a brick plat band above both the ground and first floors, along with brick triangular patterning in the gable. The gable front has two leaded casements, with one in the framed bay. A six-panel door under a flat hood on brackets is located to the left (Forge Cottage), while a ribbed board door is found to the right of center (Church Cottage). A plaque in the gable reads "E/L/ 1673".
