Description
Astleham Manor Cottage is a house from the early 17th century that was rebuilt in the 20th century using original materials. It is constructed of red brick and features a plain tiled roof. The cottage has one storey and attics, with two gabled boarded dormers and diamond-pane casements. There is a small chimney stack at the left end and a multiple stack to the right of the center. The ground floor has four wood mullioned and transomed windows, with three-light diamond-pane casements on either side of the center, and a small square window in the middle. A plank door is located to the left. At the rear, there is a single-storey gable end wing that is set at right angles, featuring diamond-pane leaded casement windows. Inside, the cottage has exposed beamed ceilings, open or other old fireplaces, and exposed tie beams and rafters in the bedrooms, along with exposed stud partitions. The rebuilding was commissioned by Sir Richard Burbridge, the owner of the village of Astleham, when the Queen Mary reservoir was constructed, which covered the original village.
