Description

Curfew House is a 18th-century building located on Windsor Street in Chertsey, part of a group of five houses, some of which have been altered. The building stands three storeys high and is constructed of red brick. Curfew House, which is slightly taller and set back with a narrow forecourt, features early 19th-century front railings and a tile roof with brick-coped gabled ends. The front has a parapet and four chimney stacks.

The façade includes 17 windows, with five located in the center at Curfew House. There is a prominent pedimented feature with an arched entrance and an arched window on the first floor. Below the open pediment are brick pilasters, and the building has a moulded wood cornice with dentils. Stone impost blocks and keystones are present at the entrance and the first-floor window, as well as four arched windows on the ground floor. The second-floor windows are near-flush-frame with glazing bars, while the ground and first-floor windows do not have bars.

The tympanum is inscribed with "Founded by Sr Wm PERKINS Knt For Fifty Children clothed and taught Go and do likewise" and the date 1725 appears on the keystone of the arched first-floor window below. The entrance door features an enriched wood architrave and reeded panels with raised centers. Nos 8 and 10 have been refaced with rough flat heads to the windows and a rough band below the parapet, and they include shop fronts at the ground floor. Nos 14 and 16 have a band below the parapet with a cope and gauged flat arches to sash windows, which mostly lack glazing bars, along with wood door cases for early 19th-century entrance doors.

Curfew House is part of a group with Nos 2 to 34 (even), including No 6A.
