Description
Sutherland House is a house, now serving as the College drama department, built around 1810 and refronted in the mid-19th century. It is constructed of stock brick with red brick dressings and has a slate roof that is concealed by a parapet. The front facade features two storeys with five windows, and the central window bay projects outward. There is stone coping and a band between the floors. The mid-19th century sash windows have horns but no glazing bars. A mid-19th century portico with square piers is present. On the right side, there is a three-light splayed bay and three additional sash windows. The left side elevation is made of stock brick and has one sash window along with two blank spaces. The service wing is of a lower elevation and has two storeys with five sash windows, which are either six or twelve panes.
Inside, the house retains a large early 19th century well staircase featuring two cast iron balusters for each tread and a mahogany handrail. The staircase has a glazed roof with a stained glass anthemion design and a cornice decorated with anthemions. Several late 18th century doors are still in place, and the hall features an ovolo-moulded cornice. There is also an early 19th century service staircase.
