Description

Ricebridge Farmhouse is an interesting early 17th century house that marks the transition from the Elizabethan H- or U-plan to the Jacobean style with its flat-fronted, gabled facade. The roof plan is H-shaped, and the facade is flat with twin gables. The building features exposed timber-framing at the back, while the front is made of fashionable red brick arranged in a bond that alternates between a straight stretcher course and a header-and-stretcher course, giving it a strong yet primitive appearance. The house has fairly high-pitched tiled roofs with original bargeboards, is two storeys tall with an attic, and has two windows. There are bands at both floor levels that step up over the windows, flat gauged brick arches above the first-floor windows, and 4-centred relieving arches below. The gables have raised brick borders around blank round panels, and two small windows near the center were blocked shortly after the building was constructed. The farmhouse has two plain boarded doors, and the rear elevation features a stone-flagged roof. There is a small brick and stone cellar that may have been added later. In front of the house, there is a box-edged formal garden that likely dates back to the same period as the house. The interior includes two bays of an open hall with a smoke bay.
