Description
The Glanville Tomb, located 5 metres north of the North Chapel of the Church of St. John, is a tomb dating from 1717 to 1718. It is made of limestone and stands on a stepped stone base with a panelled pedestal that is approximately four feet high. The tomb features a cornice top and fielded panels on the sides above a moulded base. Atop the tomb is a crowning urn, about 2½ feet high, set on a stepped plinth within an Acanthus moulded socket. The urn is decorated with a garland and cherubs, has a gadrooned top, and is finished with a flame finial. There is an inscription tablet on the north side of the pedestal. The tomb is surrounded by a railed enclosure, which has urn finials at the corners, though four rails are missing from the north side. It is dedicated to William Glanville, who was the nephew of John Evelyn.
