Description
The walled garden, located approximately 75 metres west of the house at Polesden Lacey, is likely from the 19th century. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond with rendered coping and has a rectangular plan measuring about 70 by 40 metres along an east-west axis. The north wall, which was formerly the rear wall of greenhouses, stands around 4 metres high and features a central entrance at the base of a square, two-stage water tower. This tower has corner pilasters and a round-headed doorway with tile voussoirs. The other walls are about 3 metres high, each sloping down in the centre to a gateway flanked by square piers topped with urns and ornamental wrought-iron gates. The south wall also includes similar intermediate piers, and there is a westward extension approximately 40 metres long, with its north face made of flint and brick bands, equipped with ledges and holes for rock plants. It also has a central gateway like the others and a circular "window" in the centre of each side length.
