Description

Old Barn Hall is a former barn associated with Sole Farm, now serving as a village hall. It likely dates from the 17th century or earlier, although the exterior has been completely altered in the 20th century. The building has been slightly relocated and extended during this time. It features a timber frame that is now encased in modern brick, topped with a red tile roof. The exterior is not of special interest, as it has been surrounded by modern flat-roofed aisles and has a hipped roof with dormer windows added.

Inside, the structure consists of a six-frame post-and-truss system with large jowelled posts and arch-braces supporting the tie-beams. The wallplates are scarf-jointed and reinforced with iron straps. The roof is windbraced with queen struts and hipped at both ends, though it has been ceiled at collar level. The rafters are made of large scantling, and the frames contain carpenter's marks arranged in a series from east to west. The posts also show blocked mortices from former mid-rails.
