Description

Patsom Cottage is a farmhouse, now a house, likely built in the mid to late 16th century. It has been altered and recently enlarged. The building features a timber frame with brick and tile cladding at the front and brick nogging at the rear, topped with a red tile roof. The plan is two-and-a-half bays, with a lean-to addition at the east end; the addition at the west end is not of special interest. The cottage stands two storeys high with two bays, a plinth, and patterned tile-hanging on the first floor. The south front has two small two-light casements on each floor, with those on the first floor located under gablets. There is a lean-to at the right-hand end and a chimney at the right-hand gable, with the entrance accessed by a porch attached to a modern addition on the left. The rear displays exposed timber framing at the ground floor, which includes sill, posts, rails, and studs. There are two-light and one-light casements at the ground floor, and two-light casements above, along with an added porch at the east end.

Inside, the cottage features timber framing, including wall posts, a chamfered spine beam at the ground floor, and three cross-frames on the first floor, arranged asymmetrically as if for a former smoke bay at the east end, with one tie-beam severed for a doorway. Arch-bracing supports the frames in the centre and at the east end, while wind-bracing is present in the roof. The interior also includes an inglenook fireplace with a chamfered bressummer and a quarter-turn staircase located between the chimney stack and the front wall. The ground floor partition between the bays has been removed, and the beam and joists beyond this have been replaced.
