Description
Pixham Mill House is a mill house built around 1839 by a local contractor named Mr. Clears, designed in a Classical style. The building is constructed of local red brick in Flemish bond and features a hipped slate roof, five brick chimneystacks, and a wooden bracket eaves cornice. The entrance is located on the side, making the principal elevation face the garden front. The house is two storeys high with five windows and three chimneys arranged symmetrically. It has twelve-pane sash windows without horns, retaining original glass. The central window features a cement balcony with balustrading supported on stone brackets, while below it are French windows with marginal glazing.
The right side elevation consists of two bays, with a blank first floor on the left and a rusticated cement porch. The rear elevation includes a tall twenty-four pane staircase window and a blocked door, with a plinth at the base. There is a service wing attached to the house, which is of a lower elevation and originally had one window but was extended by one bay in the early 20th century, matching the original style and featuring a wide entrance with a cornice on brackets. A late 20th-century one-storey extension has been added to the rear of the service wing.
Inside, the house boasts a large well staircase with stick balusters, original box shutters, doors, and most fireplaces made of marble or wood, some featuring cast iron firegrates.
