Description

Thorpe's Bookshop is a bookshop that was formerly known as the Constitutional Hall. It dates from the early 19th century and has 20th-century extensions at the rear. The building is constructed of colourwashed brick and features a stone-coped parapet that obscures a plain-tiled roof. It stands three storeys high, with stacks located at the rear.

The front of the building is regular in design, with two 15-pane sash windows on the second floor and two 20-pane sash windows on the first floor below, both of which are set under gauged brick heads that have been painted over. On the ground floor to the left, there is a tripartite glazing-bar sash shop front window, which is flanked by fluted end pilasters and scroll brackets supporting a blind box above. To the right, there is an arched entrance with chamfered piers and flanking pilasters that support an entablature above. The spandrels of the arch feature carved roses, and the words "Constitutional Hall" are inscribed on the arch face. The entrance hall has Greek-key patterned paving on the floor, leading to inner double panelled doors beneath a fixed overlight. Inside, there is a 19th-century square banister staircase. The 20th-century extensions at the rear are not considered to be of special interest.
