Description
The barn at Cotterells Farm is an early 17th-century structure that was extended in the 18th century. It features an oak timber frame clad in weatherboarding, with a Bargate stone gable facing the street. The barn has a half-hipped roof covered in clay peg tiles. Originally, it consisted of five unequal bays, with cart entrances leading to the yard and stackyard. The roof has diminishing principal rafters, pegged straight wind braces, and originally included vertical queen posts, which are now missing. It also has heavy tie beams and collar arching braces supporting large cut jowled posts. In the 18th or early 19th century, two additional bays were added, extending the barn to the wall, featuring straight posts, arched braces, plain principal rafters, and a 20th-century inserted floor ridgepiece. Attached to the north is a smaller barn built on a ragstone plinth, consisting of four bays with a mid rail, the same jowled posts, through purlins, and angled open struts.
