Description
This is a pair of cottages, Tower Cottage and Red Rose Cottage, built in 1867 for the Lovelace Estate. The cottages are constructed of red brick with a rendered plinth and brick decorations. They have slate roofs with ridge cresting, some of which is now missing.
The cottages are two storeys high, with a plat band above the ground floor and an alternating brick billet band to the eaves. Corbelled brick stacks are located to the front right of centre and at the end right. The front elevation has a regular arrangement of four casement windows that break through the eaves on the first floor, and four windows with cambered heads on the ground floor. The ground floor windows are half-glazed and have cambered heads. A half-glazed, cambered head door is set within a trelliswork, “rustic” porch with a slate roof leading to Tower Cottage. Red Rose Cottage has a brick and weatherboard gable porch to the right. 20th-century extensions have been added to the rear. The cottages are listed for their contribution to the group value of the surrounding buildings.
