Description
The Bath House and Terrace at Albury Park, built between 1667 and 1676 by John Evelyn for Henry, 6th Duke of Norfolk, is designed to resemble the grotto of Sejanus at Posilipo near Naples. The terrace spans two levels and extends for a quarter of a mile, featuring red brick retaining walls approximately 7 feet high. At the center of the upper terrace, there is a tunnel that extends for "30 perches" into the hillside. The tunnel entrance is framed by a semi-circular brick wall with arcading, which includes 10 round-headed niches and 2 round-headed doorways, with the terrace continuing on either side. In front of this wall is a pool with a fountain, originally dated 1666, though the head of the fountain is now broken.
The lower terrace features the bathhouse, which is a brick vaulted room that contains 3 round-headed niches on the north, east, and west walls, equipped with pipes to carry water from the pool above. The south front of the bathhouse has a three-bay design with square keystoned windows flanking a central keystoned door. The building has rusticated quoined angles and a brick cornice above, with the keystones dated 1676. Flanking stairways lead up to the upper terrace, which also features round-headed niches in the walls.
