Description
The water tank located a few yards northwest of Woodcote House Court dates back to 1706. It is made of lead and has an oblong shape with slightly bowed ends. The tank features a moulded plinth and cornice, with relief decoration on two short sides and one long side. This decoration includes a band of foliage with small closed coronets and armorial goats above, and large cartouches below—two on the long side and one on each short side. Each cartouche has shouldered corners, scrolled sides, a cornucopia above, Borrominesque grotesque masks below, and is adorned with husk festoons, putti, and marine creatures. Between the cartouches, the tank displays the date 1706, the initials EAN, a fleur-de-lys, and a leaping fish. The initials likely belong to Sir Edward Northey, the builder of Woodcote House. It is said that the tank was moved from his London stables to its current location in 1896.
