Description

The water tower at St Ebba's Hospital, built in 1901 by Clifford Smith for the London County Council, is a hospital water tower designed in the Arts and Crafts style. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with darker red brick and ashlar dressings, and features a plain tile roof. The tower is four stages high and square in plan, with a stack on the north side, surrounded by single-storey outbuildings on three sides that have been altered or added and are not of special interest.

Notable architectural features include an ashlar band at the first floor level, moulded cornices on the first and second floors, and round-arched, keyed openings. The windows have projecting stone sills, moulded brick aprons, and small-pane casements. The north side has a blocked doorway on the left with a window above on each floor, while a tapering rectangular stack rises on the right side, featuring an oculus at its base and ribs on either side of the upper stage, although the original coping has been removed. The other sides of the tower have paired windows, and the south side includes a lunette at the top stage with a keyed oculus above. The roof is adorned with moulded kneelers and coping at the raised verges, along with tiny dormer windows that have oversailing gabled roofs.
