Description
Thorn Villa at St Ebba's Hospital is a hospital villa accommodation built in 1901 by Clifford Smith for the London County Council. The building features altered red brick and a plain tile roof, designed in an Arts and Crafts style with a half-butterfly plan, where the two wings form a "V". It is a single storey with a partial attic and has seven-bay wings that meet at a gabled entrance bay.
The windows are small-pane sashes, some of which have replacement single-pane glazing, and are topped with flat brick arches that include keystones. The doors feature vertical glazed panels. The entrance bay is notable for its wide keyed, segmental archway that leads to a recessed double-door, which has an upper part with small panes, a small-pane overlight, and narrow side windows. The gable displays applied timber studs on a brattished bressumer, with pebble-dashed panels and a three-light small-pane casement window. It also has barge boards, a tile-hung and louvred ridge cupola with an ogee cap and finial.
The wings have a bay nearest the center that projects, along with a third bay that also features a canted bay window. There is a glass-roofed verandah between the two projections of the left-hand wing, which likely also existed on the right-hand wing, covering the doorway. Late 20th-century small blocks have been added at the end of each wing, which are not of special interest. The building has a moulded wooden gutter at the eaves, raised verges with shaped ashlar kneelers, and ashlar coping.
Thorn Villa was one of the eight original villas at St Ebba's Hospital, the first villa-style institution for people with epilepsy in England. Together with Limewood Villa and Walnut Villa, it forms a group around the cricket ground.
