Description
Nos. 2 to 8 Hornbeam Walk is a group of almshouses built around 1912 by Sir Ernest George. The buildings are constructed of red brick, featuring red brick quoins and dressings, and have a moulded wooden eaves cornice beneath hipped plain tiled roofs. The structure is two storeys high and consists of five bays, with the central three bays separated by a rusticated brick pilaster. Casement windows are present on both floors in the outer bays, and there are balconies on the first floor in the central three bays, although the outer pair of balconies has been blocked since the time of resurvey. There are three arched entrances at the ground level, with the central entrance leading to a two-flight stair that has an iron balustrade. Whiteley Village was established by William Whiteley of Whiteley's stores to provide for thrifty elderly individuals and was designed in an octagonal layout by Frank Atkinson, utilizing prominent architects of the time.
