Description
Nos. 35 to 43 on Circle Road is an almshouse group built around 1912. The building features red brick with stone dressings in the center, and red brick wings that have coved ashlar cornices beneath a hipped plain tiled roof. It has tall end stacks, a plinth, and a string course at first floor level. The structure is two stories high with a large ground floor central entrance arch that is flanked by widely spaced, paired, giant pilasters supporting an open pediment above the center. The first floor has casement windows separating the pairs of pilasters and in the center, while the ground floor outer bays feature a single bulls eye window. Behind the entrance arch, there are two half-glazed doors. The wings are three bays wide, with a central arch crowned by a pediment gable and flanked by casement windows. This block connects to Nos. 2 and 4 Heather Walk on the left and Nos. 1 and 3 South Avenue on the right. Whiteley Village was established by William Whiteley of Whiteley's stores for thrifty elderly individuals and was designed on an octagonal plan by Frank Atkinson, using prominent architects of the time.
