Description
The Thames Ditton War Memorial, built around 1920, is located in the north-east corner of Giggs Hill Green without a formal boundary. It is made of granite and features an octagonal base mounted on three rough-hewn steps. The base has a tall, slightly battered plinth in smooth finished granite, which bears the names of 89 individuals who lost their lives.
On the northern face of the memorial, an inscription reads: "IN THANKFULNESS TO GOD AND TO THE IMMORTAL MEMORY OF THE MEN & WOMEN OF THE PARISH OF THAMES DITTON WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR KING AND EMPIRE IN THE GREAT WARS OF 1914.1918 – 1939.1945 DEATH IS SWALLOWED UP IN VICTORY."
The base transitions to a central cross via a rough-hewn octagonal moulding. The shaft of the cross is approximately two meters high, also octagonal, with rough-hewn panels, and the cross member matches this design. Both the top of the shaft and the cross member feature concave mouldings. A copper wreath with a large inset sword is affixed to the northern face of the shaft.
