Description
Nos. 2 to 8 South Avenue is a group of almshouses built around 1912 by Sir Mervyn Macartney. The structure is made of red brick and features a coved cornice beneath a swept hipped plain tiled roof, which has end stacks and a central cupola supported by four columns. It is a single-storey building with five bay centres, including a central arched through-way flanked by brick quasi-pilasters and single casements. The outer projections also have single casements and are flanked by recessed arched entrances. Quadrant walls between the piers, topped with globes, connect the central block to small pavilions that have end stacks and arched entrances in a similar style. Whiteley Village was established by Milliam Whiteley of Whiteley's stores to provide housing for thrifty elderly individuals and was designed on an octagonal plan by Frank Atkinson, utilizing prominent architects of the time.
