Description
A group of eight chest tombs is located approximately 10 meters south of the south transept of the Church of St. Mary. These tombs date from the late 17th century to the early 19th century and are made of limestone. The mid-18th century tomb to the north features fielded panels and a moulded cornice. An early 19th century tomb to the east, which commemorates John Dix who died in 1820, has a moulded plinth, cornice, and top. To the west, there is a similar early 19th century tomb and two late 17th century bale tombs. One bale tomb to the north, dated 1704, is adorned with carved scrolls, rosettes, and spiral fluting at the base. Another bale tomb to the south commemorates Margaret White, who died in 1686, and features a fluted bale with an epitaph on the side. A tomb to the west has fielded panels and a moulded plinth, cornice, and top, with the dates 1833 and 1832 inscribed. There are also two low mid-19th century tombs that are not of special architectural interest.
