Description

Downham Cottage and Akeman House are a pair of 17th-century houses located on the north side of Astall Main Street. They are constructed of stone rubble with a stone slate roof. The properties feature stone ridge stacks, one to the left of centre, one to the right of centre, and an end stack to the right. The houses present a two-story, five-window facade. There is a plank door to the left of centre and another to the right of centre. The windows are 20th-century casements with wooden lintels, arranged in a regular pattern. The interior of Downham Cottage was not inspected, but it is believed to contain a blocked window located at the right end, where it joins Akeman House. Inside Akeman House, there is an open fireplace with a brick-domed bread oven to the right of centre, and a chamfered spine beam on the ground floor right.
