Description

Whittons is a house dating from the early 17th century, with possible medieval origins. It is constructed from coursed limestone rubble and features a gabled thatch roof, along with stone ridge and end stacks. The building has a three-unit lobby-entry plan and is two stories high, with a three-window range that includes three- and four-light casements with chamfered wood lintels. There is an additional two-light casement on the ground floor to the right, and a 20th-century plank door with a wood lintel located to the centre-left.

Inside, the house has large chamfered spine beams with stepped stops and large, flat chamfered joists. In the room to the far right, there is a stone open fireplace with a hollow-chamfered surround featuring a four-centred head. In the room with the 17th-century beams, there is another open fireplace with a large chamfered timber bressumer. At the rear of this room, a stone spiral staircase leads to the first floor, with timber treads that continue to the attics. The entrance to the staircase on the ground floor has a timber doorway with a Tudor-arched head. The floors in the central and right rooms are stone-flagged. The roof shows evidence of smoke-blackened timbers, although the trusses and most rafters were replaced in the 20th century.
