Description
James Cottage and Painters Cottage are two cottages built in the early to mid-19th century. They are constructed from squared and coursed chalk with brown limestone ashlar dressings, topped with an old red tile roof and featuring a brick and rendered stack. Designed in the Tudor Domestic style, the cottages are two storeys high and have a two-window range. There are label moulds over the two-light stone-mullioned windows, which have a cavetto moulding and arched heads. The windows are set in projecting square bays that rise above the eaves level and are gabled, complete with kneelers and moulded coping stones. The gabled roof also has moulded coping stones and features a ridge stack with four circular flues rendered in a diaper pattern, set on a square brick base. Attached to each gable wall are one-storey, one-bay blocks made from similar materials and style, each with a plank door. The elevation effectively uses different coloured materials to enhance its appearance.
