Description

Astley House is a rubble stone house dating from around 1720 to 1740, featuring ashlar dressings. It has two storeys and an attic, topped with a hipped, stone-tiled valley roof. There are brick stacks on the roof slopes to the south, west, and north. The house includes gabled dormers on the west and east sides, and a cambered head dormer on the south front. Notable architectural details include a deep coved eaves cornice, chamfered stone angle quoins, and plain raised cambered-head window surrounds with keystones. The sash windows have glazing bars, with a three-window range on the east and west sides, and central windows on the west side at basement and half-storey height to light the stair. The south front has a two-window arrangement with an altered ground floor, featuring a 19th-century projecting ashlar bay window with a hipped roof on the east side and a 19th-century projecting stone porch with Roman Doric columns on the west. The round arched doorway has a metal traceried fanlight and a six-panel door. Inside, there is an early 18th-century staircase with a thick moulded rail, turned balusters, and a closed string. To the north, there is a rubble stone 18th-century service range with three leaded light cross windows in cambered-head stone surrounds below and a large triple sash window in a hipped half-dormer above. On the west side, there is a slate-roofed 19th-century stable range.
