Description
The monument to the 7th Earl of Abingdon, who lived from 1836 to 1928, is a gravemarker and funerary monument designed and carved by Eric Gill. It is made of Portland stone.
The grave plot is rectangular and is defined by a headstone, footstone, and a raised curb with a flat top and raised square sections at each corner. Both the headstone and footstone feature a segmental, arched top with small scrolls at each end. The south face of the headstone is intricately carved in high relief, depicting Christ on the cross. The tomb chest has a flat top and faceted sides, with inscriptions in Gill Perpetua lettering. The west face honors the 7th Earl of Abingdon (1836-1928), while the east face commemorates Gwendoline, Countess of Abingdon (1865-1940).
