Description
Church Farmhouse is an earlier 18th century house constructed from rubble stone. It is two stories high with an attic and features a stone tiled roof and a brick stack at the south end wall. The house has two gabled dormers and a formal west front with a five-window range of exposed box glazing bar sash windows, each set in cambered head surrounds with voussoirs and dressed stone keys. The central door is framed by a painted dressed stone surround, also with a cambered head and a keystone, and displays unidentified carved arms. Above the door is a fine large wood shell hood supported by brackets, with pilaster strips below. The north wall has similar window openings, and there is a blank former stair light in the rear wall.
Inside, there is an earlier 18th century staircase featuring a heavily moulded handrail and brackets supporting the treads. The south room on the ground floor is panelled with raised and fielded panelling. Attached to the south range are two windows with 19th century casements in cambered head openings above, and a triple casement below. This building was formerly the estate farmhouse for Faringdon House and, in the 19th century, for the Wantage estate.
