Description

The Pollard Memorial is a monument located approximately 15 meters east of the Church of All Saints in Nuneham Courtenay. This late 16th-century structure is made of painted limestone and features a large panelled chest tomb with two full-length effigies: a male figure raised behind a female figure. The tomb is topped with a flat stone canopy supported by Corinthian columns, adorned with a deep frieze that is intricately carved with fruit and swags. The underside of the canopy is coffered, and it is decorated with strapwork cresting that includes a central cartouche of arms. Additionally, there is another armorial cartouche affixed to the front of the canopy. The reredos of the monument contains two arched recesses that hold inscriptions commemorating Sir Anthony Pollard, who died in 1577, and his wife, Phillippa. In front of the chest tomb are two weathered effigies of children. Originally, the monument was relocated to the grounds of Baldon House when the medieval Church of All Saints was demolished, but it was restored to Nuneham Park in the early 20th century. The monument is integrated into a 20th-century shelter. Nuneham Park is recognized in the HBWC County Register of Gardens at Grade I.
