Description

These are two cottages situated approximately 15 metres north of Howe Farmhouse. They date from the 17th century, with extensions added in the 18th century. The construction is a mix of materials: square timber framing with 17th-century brick infill, early 20th-century brick in the centre, and an 18th-century extension of knapped flint with brick dressings to the left. The roof is thatched, with brick ridge stacks. The cottages were originally a three-unit plan, later extended to four units. They are a single storey with an attic and have a five-window front. A plank door is present. The windows are late 19th-century casements on the ground floor and half-dormer windows in the attic. The interior contains 17th-century ribbed doors and 19th-century plank doors. Features include chamfered and stopped spine beams with run-out stops and a chamfered bressumer over the open fireplace. The roof has not been inspected but is likely to be of interest.
