Description
The Lodge at Howe Combe is a gate lodge to a country house, dated 1908 and likely designed by architect T Frank Green. It is constructed of flint with red brick dressings and some weatherboard, topped with a plain tile roof. The building has an L-shaped plan, facing south, featuring a stair tower on the left side and a rear wing with an outbuilding range beyond.
In the Arts and Crafts style, it showcases red brick bands, pilasters, window surrounds, and arches, along with small-pane wooden casement windows. The lodge is one and a half storeys high, with first floor windows that rise under gables. The entrance elevation includes a wide projecting weather-boarded gable above a square bay window on the right and an internal porch on the left, supported by wooden posts. The gable features a 4-light window and a stuccoed apex with a decorative roundel that is dated and initialled, AHPAS.
The left return has three bays, with a projecting central stair tower that features chequered brickwork and a small larder window below a transomed 5-light stair window, all under a semi-conical roof. There are 2-light windows on either side, with the right window forming part of the porch, and a single-storey outbuilding range to the left. The right return has a 3-light window on each floor, while the right bay under a lean-to roof has a 2-light window. The rear gabled wing has a 1-light window to the lean-to, with some late 20th-century infilling to the outbuilding range.
Inside, the lodge features 4-panel doors with brass knobs and decorative handles on the windows. The main room has a wide fireplace surround with floral tiles in an arched reveal. The larder retains a large-tiled floor and wooden shelves, and there is a dog-leg stair with diagonally-set balusters and a moulded handrail. The first floor includes two decorative fireplaces.
