Description

NUNEHAM COURTENAY NUNEHAM PARK SU5498 12/88 Column and vase approx. 20m. SW of the Temple of Flora

GV II

Column and vase. Probably c.1771. Limestone and terracotta. A plain circular column with a moulded base carries an elaborate terracotta vase on a fluted stem with a moulded cover. The bowl is decorated with festoons between 3 rams-head handles and the front is inscribed "IN HORTO/FUIT COR". The vase was probably a feature of the innovatory flower garden designed in 1771 by the Reverend William Mason, author of "The English Flower Garden", for Lord Nuneham, afterwards the 2nd Earl Harcourt. (Nuneham Park is included in the HBMC County Register of Gardens at Grade 1; Buildings of England: Oxfordshire, p.729; M.Batey: Nuneham Courtenay, 1970, p.27).
