Description
St Hilda's College, Old Hall, was originally built as Cowley House by Dr. Humphry Sibthorp between 1775 and 1783. The building features variegated brick and includes an Adam-style staircase that was partly renewed and brought from a country house of the Bertie family in Oxfordshire, possibly Rycote, which was demolished around 1785. The interior is fitted with chimney pieces from various origins. In 1880, Sir Benjamin Brodie added a North wing, which includes an outer hall and porch designed by Benjamin Woodward, with sculptured caps created by O'Shea. A South wing was added in 1897-1898 by architect P. Day, followed by a second South wing in brick, designed by W. E. Mills in 1909.
