Description
The Rectory, located on Mill Lane, is a Grade II* listed building dating back to the 15th century. It features a rectangular plan with its long axis running north and south, including an east wing and other additions. The southern part of the main block likely dates from the 13th century, while the northern section was added in the 16th century. The east wing was probably added in the 17th century.
The building is constructed of rubble with a stone slate roof and brick chimneys, rising to two and partly three storeys. The east elevation of the northern range has two projecting stacks and two 16th-century stone mullioned windows. The northern range also features a moulded string course at the first floor and 16th-century windows with three and six lights on the west side. A square-headed stone doorway with a label and moulded jambs is also present. On the north elevation, there is a staircase projection at the northeast corner, with a modern corridor on its east side, and the windows here are from the 16th century.
Inside, the Rectory includes a 13th-century opening reset in the east wall of the south range, which may have originated from the anchorite's cell known to have been located on the south side of the chancel of Iffley Church. There is also some 17th-century panelling, a plaster ceiling, and exposed roof timbers in the south range. The building underwent restoration and alterations in 1959.
The Rectory is part of a group that includes the Court House, the Church, and Church Cottage on Church Way.
