Description

This is a house dating to 1862-3, designed by Charles Buckeridge for Montagu Burrows. It is constructed of red brick with stone dressings, and has a clay tile roof with half-hipped ends. Brick stacks with set-offs are also present.

The building’s plan features an entrance and principal staircase wing on the right of the north front, with the principal rooms facing the garden to the south.

The architecture is High Victorian Gothic style. The asymmetrical north front includes a projecting half-hipped wing with a large Gothic stair window, a 2-light Gothic attic window, and a timber lean-to porch with stained glass and a chamfered pointed arch doorway. The doorway has a plank door fitted with ornate wrought-iron strap hinges, and a large lateral stack and 2-light Gothic window are set in a small gable with arched bargeboards. The south, garden, front has a 2-bay projection with 2 and 3-light Gothic windows with plate tracery. There are also attic windows in small gables with arched bargeboards, and a canted ground floor bay window. To the left, the building is set back, with a lancet window on the first floor and a corner conservatory with a tent-shaped glazed roof and a finial at the apex. The west side has large Gothic windows and a round turret under a half-hipped gable.

The interior retains much of the original joinery, including panelled doors and window shutters, Gothic chimneypieces and staircases. The main staircase has colonnette balusters and stop-chamfered newels, and some beamed ceilings are present.
