Description
Vanburgh House, located at No. 20 St Michael's Street, is a building that dates back to the 17th century but was refronted in the early 18th century. It is possibly designed by Vanbrugh or Hawksmoor, though it is more likely attributed to William Townesend. The structure is three stories tall, featuring a combination of ashlar and timber-framing, with cellars and a hipped roof made of Welsh slate, along with red brick stacks.
The façade includes a projecting cornice and a band at the second floor. The central section slightly projects and is adorned with pilaster strips that have moulded caps and a Doric entablature. The central doorway has a semi-circular head, topped with a large keystone and a sash window. Above the entablature on the second floor, there is a casement window set in a segmental keystoned head. On either side of the central feature, there are two sash windows on the first floor, which are mainly original, featuring plain reveals, keystoned architraves, and aprons beneath the moulded cills. The ground floor windows lack keystones and have shutters, while the second-floor windows have segmental stone heads and wooden casement lights. At the back of the building, the reconstructed wall is part of the city wall.
Inside, the building includes 18th-century panelling, a staircase, and fireplaces. Vanburgh House is part of a group with Nos 18 to 24 St Michael's Street.
