Description
The Oxford Area Arts Council, originally listed as the Church of St Paul, was built in 1836 based on Ionic designs by architect H J Underwood, with James Johnson as the builder. The building features a tetrastyle Ionic portico and a turret. In 1853, a sanctuary was added, designed by architect E G Bruton, which includes glass by Willement. A vestry was added by H W Moore in 1893, and there were further alterations in 1904 and 1907. The font includes reliefs by Pusey. As of 1971, the building is in extremely bad condition and under threat of demolition, although the facade is to be retained, which is significant for the view looking east up Great Clarendon Street.
