Description
Bartlemas House is a 17th-century building located to the north of St Bartholomew's Chapel, part of St Bartholomew's Hospital, which was rebuilt by Oriel College in 1649. The house is constructed of rubble and has a long rectangular plan that originally provided four tenements but is now a single residence. It features a stone slate roof and two moulded stone end stacks with moulded stone shafts, along with two projecting stone stacks at the back.
The south elevation includes two plain stone doorways with 4-centred heads and four-light stone mullioned windows, some of which have been partly renewed. There are also two similar doorways and single light windows on this elevation. The east elevation has additional stone mullioned windows.
Inside, the house contains several stone fireplaces and a mix of original and modern (1922) wood doorframes, which bear initials and dates in the spandrels, including "I.S.P." for John Saunders, who was Provost from 1644 to 1653. The roof timbers appear to have been mostly renewed.
