Description

The Chapel of St Bartholomew is a Grade I listed building located on Cowley Road. It was originally part of a hospital for leprosy founded by Henry I and was rebuilt in the early 14th century by Oriel College, which received it from its founder Adam de Brome. The west doorway dates from the late 14th century. The low-pitched roof timbers were constructed in 1524-1525 by the carpenter Robert Carow. The chapel underwent restoration in the 17th century, around 1651, when a screen was erected. For its condition in 1820, reference can be made to two drawings by J C Buckler found in the Bodleian Library, MS. Don. a 3 II 122, 123.
