Description
St Edmund Hall Library, originally the Church of St Peter-in-the-East, dates back to 1485. The building includes a crypt, chancel, and nave from around 1140-1150. A north chapel was added, and the chancel arch was likely widened between 1230 and 1240. The mid-13th century saw the addition of a north aisle and arcade, with the aisle being rebuilt around the mid-14th century. An early 14th-century northwest tower was added, and the nave was extended to the west. The chancel and nave walls were heightened, possibly in 1481, and a late 15th-century south porch was constructed. An early 16th-century vestry and chapel were added to the west of the north chapel. The church underwent restoration by Edward Blore in 1835, with stained glass by Willement added in 1839. In the 19th century, the vaulting ribs of the western part of the chancel were carved, and further restoration occurred around 1875. The chancel was refitted by Sir T G Jackson in 1882, with the exterior of the chancel restored in 1906-1907 by A J Rowley of Oxford, and the crypt restored in 1931-1932. Notable 15th-century stained glass fittings are present. The church was deconsecrated in 1967 and transformed into the Library of St Edmund Hall. A complete restoration with a modern interior and some plain glass occurred in 1970-1971, during which the west windows were renewed and the west door was blocked. Some fittings remain, while others are stored.
