Description
The Judge's Lodging, located at 16 St Giles' Street, was built in 1702 and is a two-storey building made of ashlar, which was refaced in 1932. It features cellars and rusticated quoins, a moulded cornice, a pedimented centerpiece, and a stone slate roof with four gabled attic dormers. The building has stone stacks and the northern part underwent alterations in the 18th and 19th centuries, during which two first-floor windows were lengthened and the front doorway was likely modified. There are seven sash windows with glazing bars in moulded frames, with the ground floor windows having cornices. The rear of the building is similar and includes a stone doorway with an ornamented shell hood supported by scrolled brackets. An inscription on the roof reads "Thomas Rowney, Esq, Elizabeth his wife, Anno 1702". To the south, there is a carriageway.
Inside, the building features contemporary panelling, two staircases, and a plaster ceiling, although it has been significantly altered during recent restoration. The Judge's Lodging is part of a group that includes Nos 1, 11 to 17 (consecutive), 19, 20, Black Hall, part of Queen Elizabeth House, and Nos 22 and 23.
