Description
The Sandhurst War Memorial is located on the northern part of The Green, next to the main road through the village. It is positioned in line with the Grade II-listed Clocktower Monument from 1889, creating a notable setting for one of Lutyens’ memorial crosses. The memorial features a War Cross made of Portland stone, with a shaft that has a lozenge shape, decorated with a sword and wreath in relief. The shaft narrows into a three-stage rectangular plinth, which bears the following inscriptions: the top section reads "TO THE BRAVE MEN/ OF/ SANDHURST/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ IN THE GREAT WARS"; the middle section lists names from 1939-1945; and the bottom section lists names from 1914-1919. At the base, there is a small, shallow, two-stage square foundation.
Extending from the memorial are pairs of parallel strips of Portland stone that create a cross shape in the surrounding grass. Low, broad stone benches mark the ends of three of the arms of the cross, while a small circular flower bed, bordered with Portland stone, is situated at the base of the cross arrangement.
