Description
The stable court at Shirley Hall, dating from around 1850, is a Grade II listed structure that has been partly converted into housing. The entrance features a sandstone ashlar archway, while the rest of the building is rendered, topped with slate roofs.
The stable court is arranged in four ranges surrounding a courtyard, with the entrance archway located in the east range. The north range serves as a house, the west range contains coach houses, and the south and east ranges were originally used for stabling. The courtyard is not fully enclosed, allowing access to the house between the west and south ranges.
The exterior includes a two-storey house and single-storey stable buildings. The east elevation has five bays, highlighted by a prominent stone archway in the first bay from the left. This arch features a round-headed moulded design with a triple keystone, supported by chamfered rustication and moulded capitals. Above the capitals, chamfered quoins rise to a gable designed as a pediment, complete with a moulded cornice and ball finials at the apex and sides. A relief carving of a cock is visible in the gable. The windows consist of four-pane plate glass sashes, with one on the left and three on the right. The roof is adorned with two elaborate ventilators, featuring round-headed louvred panels and gabled roofs on brackets with finials.
Inside the courtyard, the west range displays four paired carriage doors with strap hinges and a slate pent roof supported by iron columns. The north range contains a three- or four-room plan house with two axial stacks and an irregular five-window front featuring 19th and 20th-century windows. A wide archway in the centre has been filled in. The stables have undergone some alterations and are now partly used as garages.
The stable court has group value with Shirley Hall.
