Description

Two headstones, with barrel chests and a chest tomb, are located about 25 metres east of the Church of St Mary. One headstone commemorates Stephen and Mary Groombridge, who died in 1785, and their daughter Mary, who died in 1790. This stone is about 4 feet high, featuring beaded edging and palm fronds at the top, along with a large, moulded oval panel that has an inscription in good quality script. Attached to this headstone are two barrel chest tombs on a moulded base, dedicated to Thomas Groombridge, who died in 1797, and Mary Groombridge, who died in 1795, along with six deceased children buried at Westminster. The triple-headed stone has a garland hanging from a ribbon bow, from which an oval inscription plaque is suspended, detailing the six children on a draped cloth below. The chest tomb is from the early 18th century, with an ogee moulded base and a reverse ogee moulded top slab. The side panels have an illegible inscription, and the end panel features a crude incised death's head with the motto 'memento mori' and scrolled surrounds.
