Description
Nos. 14 and 16 Newcomen Road are a pair of model cottages built in 1847-1848. They were designed by the architect Henry Roberts in the Tudor style for the Tunbridge Wells branch of 'The Society for Improving the Condition of the Labouring Classes'. The cottages feature later 20th-century windows within their original surrounds.
The cottages are constructed of red brick in Flemish bond with vitrified headers, complemented by sandstone dressings. They have a slate roof with a central brick chimneystack. The plan is symmetrical and rectangular, consisting of one storey and attics, with one window for each cottage.
On the exterior, there are central three-light casement windows adorned with sandstone dressings and hood moulds, with gabled dormers above. Each cottage has doorcases with moulded sandstone surrounds and hood moulds; No. 14 has a late 20th-century door, while No. 16 features a plank door. The side elevations are decorated with moulded barge-boards and have casement windows with hood moulds on the ground floor.
The interiors were not inspected.
