Description
Nos. 10 and 12 Newcomen Road are a pair of model cottages built in 1847-1848. They were designed by the architect Henry Roberts in a Tudor style for the Tunbridge Wells Branch of 'The Society for Improving the Condition of the Labouring Classes'. There have been some late 20th-century additions and alterations that are not of special interest.
The cottages are constructed from red brick in Flemish bond with vitrified headers, and feature sandstone dressings. The slate roof includes a central brick chimneystack.
The buildings have a symmetrical rectangular plan with one storey and attics, each cottage having two windows. The projecting central sections feature wooden casement windows set in sandstone surrounds with hood moulds above. Gabled dormers above have moulded barge-boards, and the doorcases contain four-panelled doors also in sandstone surrounds with hood moulds over. The recessed end bays have wooden casement windows with sandstone surrounds and hood moulds, as well as attic gabled dormers with moulded barge-boards. The gables on the side elevations also display moulded barge-boards.
The interior has not been inspected.
