Description
This is an oasthouse located approximately 12 meters northwest of Lydd Farmhouse, dating from the mid to late 19th century. It is constructed of red brick, with the end wall of the stowage being timber-framed and clad with weatherboards, topped by a peg-tile roof.
The oasthouse has a small plan, with the stowage facing southwest and a single hop kiln at the northwest end. The exterior features a one-window front with one window on each floor, roughly central. The first floor has a 19th-century nine-pane sash window, while the ground floor has a 20th-century casement window with glazing bars, both set under a low segmental arch. To the left, there are two doorways, one above the other, each with plank doors. In front, there is a secondary timber-framed loading platform with a corrugated iron monopitch roof and ladder access. The roof is half-hipped at the right end, which also has double plank doors for cart access to the ground floor and a small fixed pane window above. The hop kiln is circular in plan, featuring a cogged brick cornice and a tall conical roof topped with a box-like ventilation system with a pitched roof for oil-fired hop drying.
Inside, the oasthouse has plain but sturdy carpentry details. This unconverted oasthouse is still in working order and is part of an attractive group of farm buildings surrounding Lydd Farmhouse.
