Description
This is an oasthouse located approximately 5 meters east of Tatlingbury Farmhouse, dating from the 19th century and likely built in two phases. The structure is primarily made of English bond brick in both red and ochre colors, with some sections being timber-framed and covered with weatherboards. It has a slate roof, and the hop kilns feature coated brick roofs.
The oasthouse is large, with a double depth stowage oriented roughly east-west, and the west end faces the farmyard. The stowage is open on the ground floor along the north side. The rear section of the stowage does not extend the full length, and there are two hop kilns located behind the east end of the northern stowage. At the eastern end, there is a cluster of four hop kilns, with two on each side of a narrow extension of the northern stowage.
On the exterior, the north side of the stowage has five bays, featuring an open arcade supported by plain posts at ground level. At the first floor, there are two plain plank doorways leading to loading hatches and three horizontal sliding sash windows, all from the 19th century. The double gable west end has a similar loading hatch doorway on the left, complete with a sack hoist, and a similar window on the right above a wide cart entrance. The hop kilns are circular in shape with a cogged brick eaves cornice. One of the kilns to the south of the stowage is missing its roof, while the other five have tall conical roofs with cowls.
Inside, the oasthouse features plain but sturdy carpentry. This notable structure is part of an attractive group alongside the medieval Tatlingbury Farmhouse and its 17th-century barn.
