Description
This is a row of three headstones located about 20 meters northwest of the Church of St Mary, dating from around 1800 and associated with the Wilkins family. Each headstone is approximately 4 feet high and features distinctive designs. The first has swagged and moulded heads with a central sunburst that includes an open eye, an inscription panel shaped like a large open book, and a draped cloth with further inscriptions. It commemorates John (who died in 1807) and Sarah Collins (who died in 1809).
The second headstone also stands about 4 feet high and has a shaped head with three crudely executed incised roundels depicting Death with a scythe and hourglass, a winged female figure holding an open book, and an angel blowing a trumpet.
The third headstone is for Isaac Bates (who died in 1840) and his family. Made of black slate, it is about 4 feet high and showcases Greek Revival detailing, including reeded pilasters, a fluted cornice with a central panel, and a scalloped semi-circular head. This headstone is signed by Burgis of Cranbrook, making it notable for its unusual material and execution in the area.
